Meet Amy Johnson, Catholic Counselor

Amy received her masters from Divine Mercy University in Arlington, Virginia, and is currently working towards her licensure as a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). She graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a Psychology major and a Catholic Studies minor.

After college, she worked in college ministry for five years. She encountered many students who struggled with mental health issues. There simply were not enough counselors to meet the demand, let alone counselors with a solid foundation in faith and human anthropology. This experience stirred a desire to be trained as a counselor. She has a particular heart for working with this population.

Additionally, she has had experience in various clinical settings, such as working for a crisis shelter with at-risk youth and families, an eating disorder inpatient/outpatient clinic, and a private practice. Amy’s interests include anxiety, depression, self-esteem and body issues, life transitions and stressors, relationship issues along with attachment styles, and values work. She strives to collaborate with her clients as well as use empirical treatment models to best fit her clients and their situation. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Person-Centered, Existential Therapy, and Solutions-Focused Therapy.

A message from Amy:

Life is a journey filled with great joy and sorrow. There can be many challenges that are difficult to manage alone. As a counselor, it is a gift to accompany people along this journey! To help people transform experiences of trial into opportunities for greater transformation. I strive to collaborate with my clients to establish goals and honor their dignity and uniqueness as a human person. I recognize that each person is a part of a whole and it is important to understand one’s family context, education, friendships, spirituality, career, etc. My hope is to help clients not just survive, but learn to flourish. I am excited to work with you and meet you right where you are!
